Tipperary Cup - Round Towers 2-10 Neasden Gaels 0-7 - Ruislip 01/04/12

Round Towers last meeting with Neasden in division 1 last year saw a 7 point win for the North londoners, but the Towers cantered away form Neasden in this game thorough gritty performances over the park and in no small measure to the part played by the two best players on the field, Paul Lambe and the mecurial Brendan Towey.

With the early exchanges eliciting little advantage for either team, and a plethora of handling errors dominating proceedings, it took 2 Brendan Towey frees to get the Towers on the score board.

Neasden traded points though and were always only 1 or 2 scores of the pace, indeed int he first half if either team had cut out the simple errors then they would have finished on top, While Towers seemed
content to spread the ball around, even if it meant a low connection rate with kick passes at this early stage of the season, on the other hand Neasden suffered from an over greedy centre forward who refused
to pass, John O'Donoghue was only too happy to let him run into corners and shoot from impossible angles. Gaelic football never was meant to be a one man game. Shane Flanagan went down with a twisted knee which gave Colm Ruane a chance to test his metal at senior and he almost had a chance to
strike the first major of the game when he got himself into a lovely position with loads of space, unfortunatley the opportunity to pass was ignored and the chance wasted, Towers then tried a diagonal
weighted pass to the on-rushing Brendan Towey who was heading full team for the box but it was intercepted by the Neasden full back.

At the back there was equal cause for concern with more than 1 ball being scrambled to safety and the odd unneccesary free being conceded due to a combination of poor handing, loosing th eball then fouling to
get it back.

Brendan Towey resembled Messi as he danced around the neasden defence to cue himself up for goal, but will have been disappointed at the final shot which was tame and stopped on the line.

Paudi Mulholland had to deal with a lot of long range efforts that bounced awkwardly in the square, but collected well, Towers were operating well around the middle, Paul Lambe and Jason Sherlock done
very well augmenting the midfield pairing of McGovern and Dave O'Connor, and a great catch and point form Lamber before the half time whistle was enough to put Towers in 0-6 to 04 at the break.

In the second half Hank hanley came on for the Doc and an injury to Dave Reddy who had been the stand out player at the back saw Mick Holohan come on at corner forward with Ollie Bennet enthusiastically
dropping back into his favoured half back posiiton. Timmy came on for Tom Fitzgerald.

Towers added another score through lambe, before neasden pointed again, David Collins then came of with Ollie Bennet dropping to corner back and Garry McGovern to half back to make way for the behemoth
Martin Scully. Scully made an impression straight away as him one handed attempt to
catch fell to Jason Sherlock who punted on to Brendan Towey, Towey was a joy to watch as he sidestepped two players and drilled the ball into the bottom left hand corner fo the net.

Not to be out done Paul Lambe and Ruane played a 1-2 and Lambe sensing the keepers week side slotted the ball into the smae patch Towey had cast not a minute earlier for Towers second goal in a minute.
Neasden heads went down and they knew the game was up.

Towers midfield of Hank Hanley and Scully continued to dominate and Towers used the last few minutes as shooting practice, with nearly all the forwards taking the chance to register a few more wides.
In the end early days, and typical early season mistakes were made, but the effort and workrate and will to win were second to none.

Another win in the competition will be enough to see us clinch a semi final place.
